Architectural salvage makes for a great decor. As an entryway shelf, it is the perfect solution for a narrow space.
One of the easiest ways to add character to your home is by using architectural salvage as decor. The unique look and texture of salvaged pieces adds so much interest. It’s a great way to personalize your space.
Making your entryway special
I read somewhere once that you should pay extra special attention to decorating your entryway because it influences how you feel when you walk through the door everyday. You don’t want to feel overwhelmed by clutter or chaos when you open the front door.
I try to be intentional about making our entryway feel peaceful and welcoming. To me that equals a light and airy space filled only with things that are beautiful or meaningful to me.
Designing a Narrow Entryway
I would love to have an antique pew or beautiful console in our entry, but our space is really narrow. Any furniture on the wall really cuts into the space you have to walk down our front hallway. This is especially important when you are trying to get our family of 8 through the door all at once with groceries or library books after running errands.
For this reason, for the longest time, I have only had an antique mirror hanging on our shiplap entry wall. It was kind of plain, but it kept the space from feeling too crowded and it gave me easy access to this wall for shooting product photos. Yes, most of my product photos are shot against this shiplap wall in our entry because it gets great light when the front door is open.
My great grandma’s mirror
This mirror belonged to my great grandma. I love having it on our wall because it reminds me of her. The glass has spots on it from age, but that only makes me love it more. Mirrors are great for small entryways because they reflect light and give the illusion of more space. They are perfect for giving yourself a once over before you head out the door.
Architectural Salvage
I picked up this piece of architectural salvage at the 127 Yard Sale last summer. I loved the look of it and knew it would look perfect somewhere, I just didn’t have a place in mind. I only just pulled it out of our garage and thought to hang it here on our entry wall (almost one year later).
It’s a really narrow ledge, but that is what makes it so perfect here. There’s no change of one of the kids bumping into the corner of it and it allows for plenty of room to walk down our entry hallway. I love the color of the old, green, chippy paint. It looks so good on our white shiplap entry wall.
Audubon Prints as Decor
I clipped this vintage Audubon print to a clipboard and propped it up on the ledge for some color. It’s a White Ibis which is one of the birds that we always spot in our front yard. I just love the colors and details in vintage Audubon prints! You can shop our collection of vintage Audubon prints here.
More Vintage Decor
These vintage paint brushes have such great texture and they were a perfect fit for this narrow ledge. My flower frog also fit on the ledge so I stuck a vintage flashcard in it. I chose one with keys on it so I remember to grab my keys when I leave the house. I also added a brass stencil of our family number to coordinate with the mirror frame.
Creating a welcoming feel
I love looking at this beautiful wall when I walk through our front door now. It’s so clean and tranquil looking. To me, it’s the perfect mix of form and function for this space.
